Rule of Rose, a cult-classic PlayStation 2 title from 2006, may be getting a remaster. While horror franchises like Fatal Frame and Silent Hill rose in popularity in the 2000s, Sony asked developer Punchline to create a survival horror title for the PlayStation 2. This led to Rule of Rose, which featured gameplay focused on puzzle solving and surviving combat scenarios.

After release, Rule of Rose received a cult-following, with some believing it to be among the best PS2 survival horror games. Fans appreciated the game's unique art direction, story, and creative risks that made it stand out from other survival horror games of its time. Despite the praise gamers had for it, the title was banned in the UK for its themes of violence and abuse between children and content that many considered obscene.

Twitter user AestheticGamer1 notes seeing the option for a Rule of Rose remaster in an interest survey. This survey was held a few years ago, but no announcements have been made yet. AestheticGamer1's comments about the survey are in the middle of a thread highlighting their appreciation of Rule of Rose, describing it as "an Artistic Achievement in the Medium" and showcasing the three physical copies they managed to purchase of the game for their collection. Horror fans love games that emphasize the monstrosity of humans, and Rule of Rose fits right in.

This Sony exclusive may have a chance at being remastered. Other survival horror classics like Dead Space and Resident Evil 4 recently got remakes, and related company Atlus, which worked on Rule of Rose's North American release, has also followed up on bringing back fan favorites after surveys found enough interest. The most recent example of this situation is Persona 3 Reload, which appeared in Atlus surveys as a concept that received plenty of fan support before being announced. Fans of the company may be excited to know Atlus is interacting with old game partners as well.

With the recent trend in gaming that favors remasters and remakes, Rule of Rose may have a fair chance of showing up as a remaster sometime soon. With Sony renewing trademarks for other PS2 classics, it is clear that the company has its older library in mind. Fans of the game claim it was misunderstood after suffering unnecessary controversy, which means the opportunity for the game to get a second chance would not go unappreciated.
