The popular MMO Final Fantasy XIV, once seen as a total flop, is now held up as a model of video game comeback stories. Over time, Square Enix has come to count on the steady, reliable income it gets from the game's huge player base, and the online multiplayer title has become one of the company's main money-makers.

PC Gamer looked at the publisher's newest earnings report and found some noteworthy bits. While total net sales are down (that's not good), operating income is up (which is good). Square Enix thanks Dawntrail for this, saying the boost comes from "the expansion pack release in the MMO sub-segment". The company also points out that its "HD Games" area (Final Fantasy XVI, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth) was down and that its "Games for Smart Devices/PC Browser" section lost even more, making Final Fantasy XIV look even stronger by comparison.

While the HD Games division lost SE about ¥1.2 billion ($24.7 million), the MMO segment actually earned ¥13.1 billion ($85.2 million). No wonder the company is cutting back on single-player games; Square Enix could do pretty well by just focusing on the XIV fanbase.

Are you amazed to see Final Fantasy XIV, launched in 2010, doing better than the new main single-player Final Fantasy games in 2024? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
