In a lengthy one hour video, the Enhanced Edition fan mod for the PC version of Silent Hill 2 received their new and final update this week, with a huge amount of new changes and quality of life improvements that make this the definitive way to experience the original Silent Hill 2 in all its glory.
"Silent Hill 2: Enhanced Edition" is a fan mod that focuses on making the original Silent Hill 2 release for PC playable on modern hardware, and alongside that, the team provides a huge number of visual, audio and gameplay improvements to make it a much better experience all around.
According to John Kubiak, project manager for the Enhanced Edition mod, this new update will be the last one by the development team behind the mod, as they have achieved each and every goal that the team wanted to realize into the PC version of Silent Hill 2. Kubiak reaffirms that, while the mod itself won't receive any new features or updates, if any subsequent update or driver on the PC side of things breaks compatibility with the Enhanced Edition mod, they will come back to allow the mod to work on the latest hardware.
Their new and last update offers a great list of new improvements, ranging from visuals, audio and gameplay features, which include:
- Complete rework for the full screen images found in the game.
- Brushing up environmental assets throughout the game to give it a more lived-on and populated feel, like adding trees or other items to originally empty areas sometimes enshrouded by fog.
- More texture rework from previous versions.
- Texture and 3D model fixes still remaining from previous versions, like filling in otherwise buggy model vertices, empty sides of 3D objects/rooms, etc.
- Consistency between 3D assets and cutscene assets.
- Improved FMVs.
- Fixes to audio queues and other sounds.
- Full new 3D models for certain 2D textures from the original game, like fences, ending objects, certain glass objects and other things.
- Lighting fixes to certain areas in the game.
- Added flashlight's reflection to certain surfaces all throughout the game.
- Reworked the game menu to remove obsolete options and added new ones into it.
- Reworked attacking behaviour for James and melee weapons.
- A fully reworked water effect to make it more realistic.
- And much, much more...
