Rebellion has announced the revival of the classic Amiga game Speedball, now available as a Steam Early Access title. Originally developed by the Bitmap Brothers in 1988, Speedball is a futuristic sports game that blends elements of handball and ice hockey. The new iteration, set in the year 2138, features cybernetically enhanced teams competing in a brutal, fast-paced sport designed to distract the masses from their grim realities. Players can engage in both single-player and multiplayer modes, with matches characterized by high-speed passing, coordination, and strategic team management. The game will remain in Early Access for about a year, during which Rebellion plans to introduce new modes, a team management system, and various cosmetic updates based on community feedback.

The revival of Speedball is significant in the retro gaming scene, as it brings a beloved classic to a new generation while offering nostalgic elements for returning players. By modernizing the gameplay mechanics and incorporating community-driven updates, Rebellion aims to capture the interest of both old fans and newcomers, potentially revitalizing interest in retro-style sports games.

Here's some PR:

"In Speedball, players will compete in a high stakes sport featuring visceral takedowns, with the most brutal relived via the in-game slow motion camera. Matches are fast-paced, explosive and unpredictable.
Alongside mastering high-speed passing, coordination and shooting during matches, players will also need to select, position and organise their team based on their stars' strengths, weaknesses and cybernetic augmentations. Will your team be known for all-out aggression, or will you develop a defensive powerhouse?"
