Next-Generation Dreamcast VMUs, specifically the VM2 (Visual Memory Unit 2), are getting several essential features that significantly enhance the original VMU's functionality:

1. Backlit LCD Display: The most crucial upgrade is the inclusion of a higher-resolution backlit LCD screen. This feature allows users to finally see the VMU's display clearly, even in dimly lit environments. The screen, while slightly different in dimensions from the original, offers improved visibility and readability.

2. Rechargeable Battery: The VM2 comes with an internal rechargeable battery, eliminating the need for frequent battery replacements. It can be charged via USB-C or when connected to the Dreamcast controller, with a full charge taking about 15 minutes and lasting up to two weeks when idle.

3. MicroSD Storage: Users can now create multiple "virtual" VMUs using MicroSD storage (up to 32GB). This feature significantly expands the storage capacity beyond the standard 200 blocks, allowing for more save data and mini-games to be stored.

4. Improved Compatibility: The VM2 is designed to work seamlessly with the original Dreamcast system. It can transfer existing save data from old VMUs and is recognized by the console as a standard VMU.

5. Enhanced Features: The device includes various additional features such as:
- Automatic VMU switching when used with GDEMU ODE running the latest openMenu version
- Support for homebrew VMU games
- Adjustable internal clock speed for faster mini-game performance
- Region changing capability
- "Ghost" mode to replicate the original VMU's LCD screen ghosting effect

These upgrades address many of the original VMU's limitations, such as the lack of backlight, frequent battery replacements, and limited storage capacity, while maintaining compatibility with the Dreamcast system and expanding its functionality for modern users.
