The upcoming Mario & Luigi: Brothership will be the first game in the long-running RPG series that is not developed by AlphaDream. Mario & Luigi: Brothership was announced at the big June 2024 Nintendo Direct event. It was, in fact, the very first game shown off by Nintendo, setting the tone for what would be one of the most exciting Nintendo Direct presentations in years.

The Mario & Luigi: Brothership trailer confirmed a huge leap forward for the series' graphics, with the game adopting a cartoony, cel-shaded art style as opposed to the more pixelated look used in previous entries. Even so, the game appears to be retaining much of what made the Mario & Luigi series so popular to begin with, but it's also venturing into uncharted territory.

In 2003, AlphaDream released Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga on the Game Boy Advance, the first game in the series. This was followed by Partners in Time and Bowser's Inside Story, with all three games earning critical acclaim. Follow-ups Mario & Luigi: Dream Team and Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam still earned mostly positive reviews, but were not as well-received as their predecessors. Unfortunately, developer AlphaDream filed for bankruptcy in 2019, meaning the upcoming Mario & Luigi: Brothership is being made by a different developer. The specific developer working on Mario & Luigi: Brothership has not been revealed by Nintendo at the time of this writing, but fans have offered some theories.

List of Mario and Luigi Games

  • Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga - 2003
  • Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time - 2005
  • Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story - 2009
  • Mario & Luigi: Dream Team - 2013
  • Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam - 2015
  • Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions - 2017
  • Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey - 2018
  • Mario & Luigi: Brothership - 2024
Two of the more popular theories is that Mario & Luigi: Brothership is being made by Grezzo or Next Level Games. Grezzo has worked on major Nintendo projects in the past, including the 3DS version of Luigi's Mansion and the Switch remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, the latter of which is having its art style continued in the upcoming Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. Next Level Games, which was acquired by Nintendo in 2021, is currently working on Luigi's Mansion 2 HD for the Switch, but there are those who believe that the studio also has a hand in Mario & Luigi: Brothership.

Until Nintendo decides to reveal the developer of Mario & Luigi: Brothership itself, all fans can do is guess as to who is behind the new game. Regardless, fans are clearly hyped about Mario & Luigi: Brothership, and many will be looking forward to playing the game come its launch on November 7, even though AlphaDream is longer at the wheel.
