News Kick zombie butt and look great doing it when Lollipop Chainsaw (remake) RePOP launches for PC, consoles this September

Lollipop Chainsaw is a cult classic that first launched in 2012. The collaboration between Goichi Suda (Suda51) and James Gunn (yeah, that James Gunn, it's obvious if you've seen 2001's The Suicide Squad) is a subversive hack-and-slash game about a cheerleader with a short skirt violently fighting through horde after horde of zombies. Two years ago, Dragami Games announced that the game would be back soon in some capacity. One month later, we learned that its return would be a remake (though unfortunately without the original soundtrack). It took almost two years, but the first trailer for Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP has finally dropped alongside its launch date reveal.

The original Lollipop Chainsaw, and by extension this remake, follows high school cheerleader Juliet on her 18th birthday. And what a birthday! When she heads to the front of the school to meet her boyfriend, Nick, Juliet learns there's a zombie outbreak. While stopping a zombie from attacking his girlfriend, Nick ends up bitten. This is the part in most horror movies when the girl is all like "well I'm sure he'll be fine" and then ends up locked in a closet with him when he turns or something… but Lollipop Chainsaw isn't most movies, or even most games.

To prevent Nick from turning, Juliet does what any sane person would do: fully cut through her beautiful boyfriend's neck. For story reasons, for the rest of the game Nick is a talking head hanging off Juliet's belt. The pretty girl is the leader here, the man just her lowly sidekick that does makes quips but has no real purpose for the most part. It's up to Juliet to save the world before she misses her own birthday party.

Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP is considered a definitive version of the original that leaves the story unchanged but features quality-of-life improvements and additional gameplay content. In Original Mode, play as the original game is played. If you want something more stylish (fun!) but less violent (doesn't that defeat the game's purpose?) there is RePOP mode that, as stated in the trailer, has less violence and uses pop-art damage effects.

Quality improvements in Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP include full HD resolution, faster chainsaw action, adjusted input timings for Combo Actions, better Chainsaw Blaster action, and more. Gameplay-wise, there are those two modes I mentioned before plus a Time Attack mode with ranking. There are also four new chainsaws with distinctive features. The game is more stylish than ever, with 30 total costumes and four new hair colours. Juliet's room has been expanded with "more features."

Developed by Dragami Games (with some of the game's original developers), Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP will be released for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series on September 25 (worldwide minus Japan) and September 26 (Japan). It will launch digitally and physically, more with details being available at a later date.
