Polyphony Digital has taken the highly unusual step of making a game update for Gran Turismo 7 available to download some 24 hours early, with the 1.54 patch now available to PlayStation 5 players.

The update download itself isn't available on PlayStation 4 consoles, but both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro players can download it now — and it's a bit of a monster. It weighs in at 32GB, or over a full order of magnitude larger than a normal Gran Turismo 7 game update, leading to some speculation as to what the contents may be.

While you can download the file now, it won't be available to install until 0600 UTC on Thursday November 21, and that marks the first time we've seen update preloads in a Gran Turismo title. The sheer size of the thing is probably the reason behind that, in order to allow a more progressive roll-out than having several million PS5 and PS5 Pro users trying to download ten times as much data all at once.

In all other regards the update is following the usual GT7 update timeline, with an announcement from studio chief Kazunori Yamauchi over the preceding weekend and a now-confirmed due date of the last Thursday of the month.

That means we can expect some further information later today regarding what the update will bring in terms of content, with at least a preview video, although we're pretty confident we already know the broad strokes in that regard.

The update, which looks to have skipped a version number from 1.52 to 1.54, will bring five new cars into the game for all players. We're expecting them to be the much-requested Ford Escort RS Cosworth, Mercedes W196 Monoposto (and make sure you save up for that one!), a 992-generation Porsche 911 Turbo, the Porsche Mission X Concept, and a new Suzuki Jimny variant probably based on the global "Sierra" body.

Other contents are unknown at this time, and although the very large download size might tempt players into thinking a new circuit or circuit location might be part of it, we're tempering our own expectations to it simply being down to the PS5 Pro Enhanced patch.

It's likely that the 32GB isn't all-new data, as it represents almost a quarter of GT7's current 136GB size on disc, so there's probably some repackaging of the PS5 install going on. That would also explain why PS4 (and PS4 Pro) players don't have access to the preload.

Either way, we're not going to have to wait long to find out more if the usual timings hold out, so stay tuned over the next few hours!
