Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races: Kart Attack

There's a rare appearance for one of the least conventional vehicles in the game in this week's Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races, available from today and for the next seven days.

Daily Races comprise the core ranked multiplayer events in GT7, as player ratings — Driver Rating (DR) and Sportsmanship Rating (SR) — are updated after each race and used to set their ranking for the flagship esports series each season.

Races run every 20 minutes (every 30 for Race C) across the entire week, giving you plenty of chance to gain (or lose) rating points, with DR a zero-sum game across the grid and affected by how high up you finish, and SR by how well you can keep it on-track and not drive into things or other cars.

Once again, Race A is partially excluded from this all this week, as there's no DR updates — which is pretty common in this race. That means you have little to gain and can easily lose out on SR if you have a messy race — which is a distinct possibility.

That's because you'll be using the Gran Turismo Racing Kart 125 Shifter which is, as the name suggests, a kart with several different gears. It can be a very tricky vehicle to drive with its very quick steering rack and extreme dislike of curbing.

You'll find this all enhanced by the fact you're racing at the most recent circuit addition to the game, at Eiger Nordwand. The triple-hairpin section will be interesting, and you'll be passing through it five times as it's a five-lap race, with the karts on their standard Sports Soft tires.

Watch out for the "false start check" too. This requires that you hold the kart on the brakes from the moment the final start light goes on and until it goes off, or you'll get a short, on-the-spot power loss penalty and probably be part of a big accident unless you're at the back.

Race B is more standard fare, taking you to the also-fictional Sardegna Road Track location for a race in Gr.4 cars.

You've got a free choice of cars from this category, which is similar to GT4 in using modified road cars but with a wider mix of drivetrains than we usually see in the real world. In fact it's one of the all-wheel drive cars that's dominating the leaderboards at the moment in the shape of the Nissan GT-R Gr.4.

Whatever your choice, it's a five-lap race around the mid-length B course, and the car will need the standard Racing Hard tire for the race.

For Race C this week we see a return of a regulation that hasn't been used much in Daily Races recently but which will be familiar if you do a lot of multiplayer championship events: required tires.

The race itself is a ten-lap run around Mount Panorama in the GT3-like Gr.3 cars, with free choice on what car from that class you select. So far, so standard, but you're going to need to buy and use — for at least one lap each — some upgraded tires.

Racing Medium and Racing Soft tires types are both available, and both must be used for a lap (passing once over the start/finish line on the circuit, not in the pits) during the race or you'll end up taking a one-minute penalty to your overall time at the end of the race.

There's also a 4x tire wear multiplier to take into account. This will result in the Soft tires degrading much quicker than the Medium, so while you'll want to run the grippier Soft for as long as possible you will find that there's a point where they are worn to the point of being slower than new Mediums.

In order to access the Daily Races, you'll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 ("Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade") in the GT Cafe single player hub. A PlayStation Plus subscription is required to take part.

With GT7's Daily Races updating every Monday across the game's life to date, the next new set should arrive on Monday, September 9.
