The trailer had the iconic 'Mad World' by Tears for Fears in the background, which was a callback to the original Gears of War trailer for the Xbox 360 that was released all those years ago in 2006. The iconic song also appeared in a trailer for the 2015 PC and Xbox One remaster Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, which now makes it third-time lucky for fans.

Developed by The Coalition, Gears of War: E-Day appearing at the Xbox Games Showcase will come as little surprise to many as it's got to be one of the worst-kept secrets in the video game industry following months of rumours that it would be appearing at the show. However, we were expecting Gears 6 but instead, we're getting an origins story for series icons, Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago.
When the first Gears of War was released, it started with many questions unanswered from the get-go with Marcus being locked up in prison but now it seems we'll be going into detail before those events and what really happened on Emergence Day. Oh, and this prequel will be powered by Unreal Engine 5.
The Gears of War origins story means that the conclusion to the Kait Diaz story arc that began with Gears 4 in 2016 will be put on hold for now, at least. There were also rumours of a Halo: The Master Chief Collection-inspired bundle of remasters for the Gears of War series but unfortunately that bundle of joy was nowhere to be seen. That being said, I am a firm believer in there being no smoke without fire, so hopefully a Gears of War remastered collection might still be announced in the coming months.
"Emergence Begins. Experience the brutal horror of Emergence Day through the eyes of Marcus Fenix in the origin story of one of gaming's most acclaimed sagas," reads the description from developers, The Coalition.
"Fourteen years before Gears of War, war heroes Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago return home to face a new nightmare: the Locust Horde. These subterranean monsters, grotesque and relentless, erupt from below, laying siege on humanity itself. Built from the ground up with Unreal Engine 5, Gears of War: E-Day delivers unprecedented graphical fidelity."
Gears of War: E-Day will be released for PC and Xbox Series X/S but sadly no release date or window has been announced, yet. However, we do know that it will likely launch on day one on Xbox Game Pass and with a bit of luck, we'll get that elusive release date later this year.
