Video game adaptations of gamebooks are common enough but those with FMV truly bring the story to life. Deathtrap Dungeon: The Interactive Adventure originally launched for PC back in 2020, and is only now about to make its PlayStation debut (with some upgraded features).

Fighting Fantasy is an iconic series of ground-breaking (and best-selling) gamebooks. It was created by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone, beginning with The Warlock of Firetop Mountain, published in 1982. Each gamebook blends branching narratives with dice-based RPG elements. Deathtrap Dungeon is based on the sixth book of the series. It is believed to be the most popular book in the series. You are challenged to survive the Trial of Champions in the labyrinth of Fang, which is filled with traps and deadly creatures set by the devious Baron Sukumvit. Livingstone is still writing Fighting Fantasy gamebooks, with The Dungeon on Blood Island also launching this week, on the seventh.

Deathtrap Dungeon: The Interactive Video Adventure is a new take on the classic gamebook. It is part story and part game with nearly five hours of video. Create your character then choose between the original or a new (perhaps easier?) combat system. Every decision matters once you enter the dungeon. There is no way to see where your choices will take you and no way to fudge the dice rolls, so there's no cheating here. At least there are loads of save points!

Eddie Marsan (Deadpool 2, Atomic Blonde) is the narrator and guide, seated in a luxurious red leather chair. He is the one to lure you into Deathtrap Dungeon. He also prompts you to make decisions. Deathtrap Dungeon: The Interactive Video Adventure is described as a faithful adaptation that utilizes the mechanics from the gamebook. You will face tricks, traps, loathsome monsters, and literal dead ends on your quest to escape and claim the prize.

Updated PlayStation 5 features include new dice roll mechanics letting you shake the dice, 4K videos, hand-tinted illustrations, and audio/graphical polishes.

Developed by Branching Narrative and published by Nellyvision, Deathtrap Dungeon: The Interactive Adventure will be released for PlayStation 5 on September 6. It is currently available for iOS/Android and PC/Mac via Steam.
