This type of commitment and passion has come to be expected from Treyarch. Over the last few decades, Treyarch has proven time and time again that it's willing to experiment and innovate on the series' formula in an attempt to keep it at the forefront of FPS gaming. While these experiments haven't always worked out, Treyarch isn't afraid to try some ideas again, and that seems to be the case with Call of Duty: Black Ops 6's casino mission, with it looking like an expansion of ideas first seen in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6's Casino Mission Could Be an Evolution of Cold War's Desperate Measures
CoD: Black Ops Cold War's Desperate Measures Mission Explored Uncharted Territory for the Series
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War's campaign doesn't often get the flowers it deserves. Set during the titular 1980s conflict, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War sees fan-favorite characters like Woods, Mason, and Hudson return to the fore, while also introducing players to new staples like Russel Adler, all of whom go on a globe-trotting tour to secretly save Europe from an array of hidden nukes. Along the way, Black Ops Cold War's campaign gives players some intriguing mission structures to work through.
One of the most interesting missions in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War comes about halfway through its campaign. Titled 'Desperate Measures', this mission sees players assume the role of KGB double-agent Belikov as he tries to steal a bunker access card and give it to Adler and his team. Desperate Measures is unlike anything fans had really experienced in Call of Duty to that point, offering a slower-paced mission that really emphasizes the espionage themes of the setting and era.
While the player's goal in Desperate Measures is simple, they can achieve it in a variety of ways, such as by swiping a spare card from the armory and downloading the codes stealthily, or by poisoning Charkov and stealing his keycard. There are also several optional objectives and branching paths along the way, all of which combine to make Desperate Measure a highly replayable mission.
How Black Ops 6's Casino Mission Can Take Things One Step Further
Based on the recent Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Direct, it seems as though Desperate Measures might soon have a spiritual successor. During the Direct, Treyarch's developers briefly mentioned a handful of mission types that are included in Black Ops 6's campaign. Among them was a mission set in an "opulent casino," where players need to conduct some kind of Ocean's 11-like heist. However, according to the developers in the Direct, this mission is "unlike any past mission in Call of Duty."
It seems very likely that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6's casino mission will be another showcase of Treyarch's more experimental campaign ideas, where the player's choices probably result in a slew of different branching paths. The Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Direct briefly showed Adler and his team swiping a waiter's keycard, blowing open an underground vault, and shooting their way out, but fans will have to wait a little while to find out if these sequences are so cleanly connected.
