This week, Xbox developer Mojang Studios has officially announced a release date for the PlayStation 5 version of Minecraft - this native PS5 release hits Sony's platform on October 22nd. However, despite Mojang being under Microsoft control for absolutely ages at this stage, we still don't know anything about a native Xbox Series X|S version of the title.

Yep, that's right; Minecraft is coming to PS5 but not Xbox Series X and S, which just feels odd considering Microsoft literally owns the IP and its development studio. Of course, the game does look and run better on current-gen Xbox consoles (and has done since a 2023 preview update), but that is still technically the Xbox One version of the game.

What's more, that sort of update is also feasible for the PS4 version of Minecraft. At this point, there have been loads of PS4 games made to look and run better via PS5 backwards compatibility, but for some reason, Mojang is going down the native route with Minecraft. This new version will support 4K resolution and 60FPS playback on PS5, with no other 'current-gen' features announced.

Just a few weeks ago, we ranted about not seeing this Xbox Series version of Minecraft yet - on the 10-year anniversary of the game's Xbox One release. It seems that, despite our calls, we won't be receiving that current-gen Xbox port anytime soon - and in the process we're still left waiting for those sweet, sweet ray tracing features. Maybe one day, eh?
