Sonic 2 Long Version

Sonic 2 Long Version
Hack of Sonic the Hedgehog 2

This Sonic 2 hack adds all the cut zones from the various betas and prototype versions onto the final version of Sonic 2.

Zones like Lost Wood Zone, Rock Desert, Genocide City and Hidden Palace are chucked in alongside the regular zones.

This hack was made a very long time ago according to the date (May 2005) and as far as I know, it still hasn't been finished but it could be another 30 years until the next build comes out (if ever).

This build was made public by StephenUK back in November 2020 who was previously in contact with Sonic Hachelle-Bee and got permission to release this build to the public.

This statement by StephenUK gives permission to share the ROM around.

"If this hack is distributed on any other forums than here (SSRG), please cross post this to those forums to clarify that permission was given to release this version, and ensure that full credit is given to Sonic Hachelle-Bee. Nothing in this hack is my work, and I am merely the original permitted distributor."

Things The Player Needs To Know:

1. If you plan on playing these ROMS on an EverDrive, sometimes after selecting the game, the game halts to a black screen, don't fear, simply reset or back out again to the EverDrive menu and next press start only, since the game is already selected, the EverDrive doesn't need to load it from the SD card, after pressing start, the game should start instantly and you should see Sonic running back and forth over the SEGA logo.

2. Lost Wood Zone is the only zone with new custom art.

3. Rock Desert has a very confusing level layout that works a bit like a puzzle.

4. I can confirm for all of you that this game does not crash at all and none of the title cards glitch the graphics out. I have played both ROMS from start to finish on real hardware.

5. Genocide City's Act 1 & Act 2 have the exact same level layout repeated.

6. Death Egg Zone now has 3 Acts each. The first two acts are simply Chemical Plant Zone's level layouts repeated with Death Egg's background with the third act acting as the final Death Egg boss level.

7. Timing is a bit off when playing in PAL 50Hz, the ending song "Sweat Dream" doesn't finish in time with the ending cutting off a bit of the song.

8. Special Stages remain the same and are unchanged.

9. I've patched these with a regular "Sonic 2 REV A" version and for Knuckles, a working "Knuckles In Sonic 2" ROM with an emulated UPMEM chip, they seem to work as they should. When patching the Knuckles version onto a working "Knuckles In Sonic 2" ROM, you need to make sure you patch it with a genuine UPMEM emulated chip ROM and the UPMEM chip ROM is needed for the Mega EverDrive X 7 and probably other EverDrives on account of the flash cart searching for that chip. If patched to an ordinary "Knuckles In Sonic 2" ROM without that emulated UPMEM chip, you'll be greeted with an endless black screen. You have been warned.
